Local Forage

  • Eating is one of our most primal and sensual acts. And eating what's good for you doesn't mean depriving yourself of gastronomic delight. Local Forage explores why traditional foods—the real, unprocessed, whole-fat foods of our grandparents—delivers the winning combination of maximum health and maximum taste.

Local Forage provides an exchange of practical information on where to buy these nutrient-dense traditional foods in the bay area, how to prepare them and how to think "beyond organic".

Mark Schapiro—Exposed

If you were interested in my post, EWG's 'Skin Deep' Site + Sunscreens, you may want to attend author Mark Shapiro's lecture next Thursday in San Francisco at Bernal Heights bookstore, Red Hill Books.

Schapiro is editorial director of the Center for Investigative Reporting here in San Francisco. He has written extensively on foreign affairs and his work has appeared in Harper’s, The Atlantic Monthly, The Nation, The New York Times Magazine and other publications, and he has reported stories for Frontline, NOW with Bill Moyers, and public radio’s Marketplace.

From the Laughing Squid entry (thanks, Bill L.): "Schapiro’s revelations in this thought-provoking work will change the way American consumers think about everyday products—from plastic softeners that can contribute to sexual malformations to lipstick additives that are potential toxins to the brain, liver, kidneys, and immune system. And it will stir them into forcing our government to take the lead of others, including the European Union, China, and countries in Central and South America.

Exposed is a revealing and fascinating look at global markets, everyday products, and the toxic chemicals that bind them. It will shock, inform, and warn American businesses and government leaders about the risks of being left behind in the international marketplace.

Schapiro’s book shines a light on Europe’s evolving search for higher standards that places Brussels, not Washington, at the center of global market innovation."

The reason I use so few cosmetics and commercial body care products is that I don't trust the hodge podge of chemicals that most of these products contain. (This is why I make my own skin moisturizer and use products on my face like pure jojoba oil, for example.) Mark Shapiro says that the U.S. has become a dumping ground for toxic waste in attractive packaging. The very lipsticks, eyeliners and blushes banned from European shelves are widely available in the United States. This is really important information, folks. I hope some of you can attend or read the book.

Read fascinating Chronicle interview with Mark Shapiro from October 7, 2007.
