Local Forage explores why traditional foods—the real, unprocessed, whole-fat foods of our grandparents—delivers the winning combination of maximum health and maximum taste.

Group Buy: Organic Nuts

Nuts_2 You gotta love Google.

Back in early November, I published a post about wanting a source for organic nuts. I personally eat a lot of nuts (see Turbo Charge Your Almonds, Spicy Candied Pecans, and nut sprouting question) because they're a nutrient dense snack and they're delicious. There is credible research that proves tree nuts are actually good for you and not the fatty villain portrayed on the USDA Food Pyramid. Nuts are a great source of protein (especially almonds and walnuts) and are loaded with essential minerals and vitamins, especially the antioxidant vitamin E. They also contain critical amino acids and are a decent source of fiber.

So back to the beauty of Google (and clean HTML code)...Here I am this new, relatively unknown blog and Jim McCoey of Rock Creek Organics, purveyor of organic nuts, found my post and offered up his company as a source. Most excellent!

Rock Creek Organics almonds and walnuts are sourced from certified organic growers in California, and his pecans are sourced from certified growers in the Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico and Texas.

All nuts are shelled and are from the current crop. The new crop for pecans will be available in mid-January and new crop almonds and walnuts began in September and October respectively. Apparently he supplies Cafe Gratitude with their nuts.

Orders can be placed with Jim by calling toll free to 866-571-NUTS (6887). He accepts credit cards and checks.

As an alternative, I was thinking of undertaking a group buy.
Here are the prices for the group buy if we get a total of 25-30 pounds of each nut: (including delivery but not tax)

Organic almonds:  $10.72/lb
Organic walnuts:   $6.11/lb
Organic pecans:  $11.50

As a comparison, here are the prices from Rainbow Grocery:

Organic almonds:  $12.47/lb
Organic walnuts:   $6.99/lb
Organic pecans:  $14.66

I would like to get a feel for demand. Please indicate if you would like to participate in the group buy and how many pounds you think you'd order. You would need to pick them up from me here in SF (just south of upper Haight). It would be helpful to include your email address in the comment form so I can contact you.

***Also, to make it easier for me, I will be asking for payments through Paypal. The Paypal payments must be from a linked checking account (Instant Transfer) not a credit card account.***
