Local Forage

  • Eating is one of our most primal and sensual acts. And eating what's good for you doesn't mean depriving yourself of gastronomic delight. Local Forage explores why traditional foods—the real, unprocessed, whole-fat foods of our grandparents—delivers the winning combination of maximum health and maximum taste.

Local Forage provides an exchange of practical information on where to buy these nutrient-dense traditional foods in the bay area, how to prepare them and how to think "beyond organic".

About Local Forage

Carlaresume_5 Local Forage is a blog hosted by writer/editor, publisher, and founder, Carla Borelli.

What We Believe

Eating is one of our most fundamental and most sensual acts. And eating what's good for you doesn't mean depriving oneself of good taste and gastronomic delight. A delicious, nutrient-dense diet is a necessary foundation for health and happiness.

Local Forage will attempt to look, even beyond the organic realm, to the culinary traditions of our ancestors and source out foods that are nourishing, unprocessed, tasty and whole. These traditions require more time in the kitchen but we believe they give highly satisfying results – freedom from acute and chronic illness, delicious meals, vitality, and healthier children.

What Our Goal is

Our goal at Local Forage is to provide a time-saving reference that will help you:

    * find the best, most delicious and satisfying food
    * maximize the vitality and health-giving properties in the food you do buy
    * educate yourself on the choices you have beyond the mainstream
    * understand the intricacies of (and avoid the pitfalls of) our modern food system

I just discovered your blog and delved deep into realms of information that put the fear of God back into me. I'm in a depressed mood from my dietary ignorance. Now I can't trust any of my local stores or providers, and I don't have the means to grow my own. Am I going to die soon?

To Roberto D'Aqua Beardpapa Montoya:
Don't fear, my dear. What I'm trying to say is that you CAN trust your local providers; much more so than giant big box providers. Talk to them, get to know them, develop a relationship. Take the mystery out of your food supply. Comprende, usted?

I can now drink milk again. I always used to drink regular or pasteurized milk maybe once a year with cookies, etc to see if I could tolerate. Always, always, I had terrible congestion within 30 minutes of the milk consumption. I now have tried raw pastured milk and have been able to crink daily and w/o ANY adverse effects!! Hooray for raw milk! And I feel so much more active when exercising when I drink a glass before my workout.

Hi, Carla -

I love your blog! Great information presented in such an interesting way. That squash soup looks so tasty. I might have to make it on this cold and rainy day.
I noticed that you have a recipe for nut milks, which looks great. I don't have time to make everything myself, unfortunately. Have you found any good nut butters out there?

Kaycie

Hi Kaycie! I get the nut butters from the bulk section at Rainbow grocery. My all-time favorite peanut butter is Arrowhead Mills Creamy Valencia Peanut Butter. Tho, I eat more tahini than peanut butter. Delicious on toast with jam. Good oils. Again, bulk section of Rainbow.
